This Nottingham property required specialist cleaning and repointing to restore the appearance of the brickwork and address the effects of prolonged moisture exposure.
The masonry was chemically cleaned before the existing mortar joints were carefully raked out and repointed, giving the brickwork a cleaner, more consistent finish while helping to protect it for the future.
Why Are White Marks Appearing on the Brickwork?
In the after photographs, you may notice some white deposits appearing on the surface of the bricks. This is known as efflorescence — natural salts that can be brought to the surface as moisture within masonry evaporates.
In this case, the brickwork had been exposed to excessive moisture as a result of poorly maintained guttering and downpipes. As the masonry begins to dry following the remedial work, moisture moves towards the surface and can leave these salts behind.
Rather than simply focusing on how the brickwork looks immediately after repointing, understanding why the masonry became damp in the first place is an important part of achieving a successful, lasting restoration.
